Website Development for Oilway: Specification-First Design for API Valve Buyers

Signed a website development agreement with Oilway, an industrial valve and petroleum equipment manufacturer headquartered in Yancheng, China. The project brief was shaped by a specific constraint: Oilway's buyers are EPC contractors and trading companies working to API standards, and those buyers judge a supplier by documentation before they ever request a quotation.

Founded in 2009, Oilway operates a self-owned foundry and three production units, producing ball, butterfly, gate, globe and check valves alongside oilfield equipment that includes wellhead devices, Christmas tree high-pressure slab gate valves and blowout preventers. The company works to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001, and its products are tested against API 6A, API 16A, API 16C, API 16D and API 598. Markets include Asia, Russia, Europe and the Americas.

Requirements from the first meeting

Three requests came out of the initial discussion. First, every product page had to state pressure class, size range, material options and applicable standard without requiring a PDF download. Second, the site needed to separate industrial valves from oilfield equipment, because the two are bought by different people inside the same EPC organization. Third, the after-sales services — trim changes, end connection conversions, gear operator installation, pressure testing to API 598 — had to be visible, since refurbishment and specification changes are a meaningful part of Oilway's revenue.

There was also a credibility problem to solve. Many Chinese valve sites make broad claims about "world-class quality" and show certificates as small thumbnails. Technical buyers discount that immediately. The site had to show the inspection process, not assert it.

Site structure

We organized the catalogue by product family first, then by standard. Butterfly, ball, gate, globe and check valves each have a landing page with a specification matrix, downloadable datasheet reference and a short paragraph on typical applications — power generation, oil and gas, water treatment. Oilfield equipment sits under its own top-level section with wellhead assemblies and BOPs treated as engineered products rather than catalogue items.

A separate Quality & Certificates section documents the four-step control process Oilway actually runs: incoming material analysis including hardness and porosity checks, tightness testing under API 598 and EN 12266 conditions, dimensional assessment of machined components, and final inspection before packing. Naming the standards and the sequence is more persuasive than any adjective.

Visual design

The visual direction borrows from engineering documentation rather than consumer retail: graphite and steel grey backgrounds, a restrained red accent taken from the company mark, generous white space around specification tables, and a technical sans-serif for numbers. Photography is factory-floor material — foundry work, machining centers, test benches — treated in cool tones so it sits calmly beside the data.

Product images are shot against neutral grey with consistent lighting across the range, which matters more than it sounds: inconsistent backgrounds make a catalogue look assembled from supplier photos, and buyers notice.

Google-friendly build

Search demand in this category is specification-led. Buyers search "API 6D trunnion ball valve manufacturer," "cryogenic butterfly valve supplier," "wellhead Christmas tree manufacturer China." We mapped those clusters to individual pages, wrote unique title and meta descriptions for each, implemented product and organization structured data, and kept page depth to two clicks. Load time was held under three seconds by compressing the factory photography and deferring non-critical scripts.

We also added an inquiry form that asks for valve type, size, pressure rating, material and standard, so the first sales reply can quote rather than interrogate.

Launch outcome

The site went live with 60-plus product and capability pages, a downloadable certificate library and a service section covering refurbishment and testing. Within the first weeks, inquiries began arriving with specification details already filled in — evidence that the pages were being read before contact, which was the entire objective.

For an industrial exporter, a website is not a brochure. It is the first technical review a buyer conducts. Oilway's new site is built to pass that review.
